Forum: prelinger Subject: Public domain worldwide?

This site is a great resource!

Just wondering if public domain status applies worldwide... in the prelinger archive I imagine it does, most of the movies being old +/or disowned, but elsewhere I've seen recent commercial movies described as public domain in the US only; due to some arcane feature of copyright law they were deemed not to have been properly copyrighted there, but would still be copyright in other countries?...

Also, I've read that US government films are public domain because the US taxpayers have effectedly funded them + thus own them. Assuming this is remotely correct, is it still OK for example for me, a British citizen, to use such footage in my work? :)

Generally, any info about worldwide issues relating to the public domain would be appreciated, thanks!
